Let’s discuss fillings- a simple procedure; but a nightmare for many!!

DO I REQUIRE A FILLING?

Mostly the reason to get a filling done is caries usually you yourself can see a black discoloration an your tooth which might tell you that you need a filling.

But, these black discolorations can be stains too!

Let your dentist decide if a filling is required by gently examining the tooth with an explorer.

Other reason can obviously be pain, sensitivity cracks or broken teeth..

TYPES OF FILLINGS:

1. FILLINGS THAT SET IMMEDIATELY-

An old Silver Filling replaced with An esthetic Composite filling.

Yes you can eat & drink anything you want seconds after you get down from the dental chair.

These fillings are done with the help of highly superior materials called composites which set in mere 40 seconds when they are exposed to a special blue light.

A special blue light used to set the filling immediately.

They have superior strength & are available in numerous tooth shades which gives your dentist the liberty to match the filling’s colour to that of your natural tooth.

2. FILLINGS THAT TAKE 30 MINUTES TO SET

a. SILICA FILLING-

It is done with a special material called glass ionomer cement (GIC) which releases fluoride constantly making the tooth less susceptible to decay; But has much less strength than the composites discussed above, thus might pop out sooner than composites. Also they can't really match your tooth color as they are available in only one shade.

FILLING PROCEDURE:

a. DIGGING

Your dentist will dig out any decay present on the tooth & test any residual decay with the help of a ‘caries detector dye'.

b. FILLING

After your tooth is all clean your dentist rebuild the tooth with the help of filling

material you chose/indicated in that tooth by the dentist
